I don't think it is a pathetic idea, although I can see how and why it went wrong. On the one hand a hug is a simple and easy gesture but on the other hand it is symbolic of acceptance and affection. It does have value because of what it symbolizes. The fact that only 30 out of 76 members of parliament eventually hugged says that it is not an easy gesture for them to make and perhaps easier said than done. I also believe that if it hadn't been filmed maybe more people would have done it. Some didn't want it to appear public as one member put it "it's acting like a clown". The idea that despite all the arguments the members can also hug is a positive thing. According to Kaplan's interview giving a hug is positive psychology and a hug does create positive emotions. However people must hug because they want to and not because they have to. In that sense maybe Benny Basan's idea was a bit artificial, but the idea is good and refreshing.
